Comet lamp

Lighting·2018

A contemporary reading of the traditional oriental lantern, the Comet lamp is built from a perforated maple wood ellipsoid, sliced through its three axes into eight modular pieces and reassembled around red copper ellipses and suspension points. The perforations do the real work: light passes through the pierced wood surface in a fine, constantly shifting pattern, turning the lamp itself into a source of texture and shadow as much as illumination. Available as a pendant, table, wall, or floor lamp, Comet uses concealed and indirect light sources so the glow always reads as coming from within the wood rather than from a visible bulb, an interplay of light and shadow that gives the piece a quiet, almost lantern-like presence in whichever version it's used.
