Office Building·Beirut Central District·2011·Competition Proposal
Set within an established block of Beirut's central district, this office building keeps a careful dialogue with its historic neighbours, matching their height and datum lines while introducing a contemporary language of its own through a fine metal mesh screen that wraps part of the facade in a soft, semi-transparent scrim. Glimpsed from the street, past mature trees and the public statue that anchors the corner, the building reads as considered rather than assertive, its glazed and screened surfaces settling into the surrounding streetscape rather than standing apart from it.
The screen itself does real work: filtering daylight and views into the offices behind it while giving the elevation a texture that shifts with the angle of approach, from a nearly solid golden surface at a distance to a much more open, transparent one up close. It's a quiet building, built to belong to its block first and to announce itself second.
