East Town

Mixed-Use Complex·Cairo Egypt·2008·Competition Proposal

A mixed-use complex in Cairo built from a run of linear blocks, unified by a shared material language of pale stone and glass punctuated with bands of rust-red accent panels, a warm, saturated counterpoint to the otherwise neutral palette, and a colour that reads clearly against Cairo's palm-lined streets. A covered ground-floor gallery, its underside lined in the same red accent tone, shelters pedestrians along the retail frontage and threads the various blocks of the complex together at street level. Above, balconies and terraces are carved directly into the building's mass rather than simply hung off the facade, each one picking up a touch of the same red accent colour against the neutral stone: small, private outdoor moments distributed across an otherwise large, continuous complex.
