The floating bed

Furniture·2018

Inspired by structures found in nature, the Floating Bed is built from repeating modules of bent solid wood, each one made of three interleaving slats that rise, fall, and overlap along the length of the frame, a construction logic that gives the bed its name, since the interwoven slats appear to lift the mattress rather than simply support it. The bent wood does real structural work too: it provides ventilation beneath the mattress, distributes support evenly along its length, and keeps the whole frame visually light despite being built entirely from solid timber. Because the bed is modular, its sleeping base can be extended or reduced by adding or removing units on either side. The same system that builds a single bed can just as easily become the base for a larger platform, without changing the underlying design language.
